JCC Speaker Lunch: "Gendered Ageism: Discrimination and Intervention"

  • David R. Kahn Community Campus 12804 Norwood Road Raleigh, NC, 27613 United States (map)

Program Description: "Gendered Ageism: Discrimination and Intervention" with Prof. Carole Cox, Fordham University, Distinguished Fellow- School of Social Welfare, Hebrew University

Women face discrimination throughout their lives. It’s a a double whammy of two powerful societal forces - ageism, holding older people less capable, and sexism, holding women less capable than men. Gendered ageism occurs when older women face discrimination from both these stereotypes at the same time. This presentation explores the issues and suggests promising interventions to combat the harm of these societal forces.

Professor Carole Cox, MSW, PhD, teaches at the Graduate School of Social Service of Fordham University, and holds an appointment at Hebrew University, Jerusalem as Distinguished Fellow at the School of Social Welfare. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, a Fulbright scholar, and a representative of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics to the United Nations. The author of 10 books and numerous articles on aging, caregiving, human trafficking, and human rights, her latest book, published in 2025, is titled Social Work and Antisemitism: Issues and Interventions.
