Western Wake Speaker Lunch: "The Jewish Cemeteries of Poland: Restoring Dignity, Preserving Heritage"

  • Beth Shalom 5713 Yates Mill Pond Road Raleigh, NC, 27606 United States (map)

Program Description: "The Jewish Cemeteries of Poland: Restoring Dignity, Preserving Heritage" with Ed Janes

Ed Janes is a Board member and officer of Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland and will discuss current projects and our efforts to "adopt out" more cemeteries for care and protection.

We will learn about the organization, (FJHP) who seek to engage descendants and other supporters to protect and commemorate the surviving sites and monuments of Jewish cultural heritage in Poland. The all-volunteer organization is working at more than 30 sites with the goal of preserving and protecting all of the abandoned cemeteries in this once thriving homeland of over 3.3 million Jews.

"If there had not been a Shoah, we would still have an obligation to care for these places; given the decimation... for those of us who survived, it's even more so our obligation to [take action to] protect our ancestral memory." Dan Oren, M.D., President of Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland (FJHP).
